As a social server, death is treated fairly lightly here. Mild gold and XP are the usual penalties. Some areas, such as the arena have none.

Starting characters have no penalty until level after level 5.

Permadeath does still happen. A soul my opt not to return to the body (player's option), or there may be circumstances where a DM my impose permadeath.

IC

The area is known to have peculiar properties, that effect death and resurrection. Something akin to Divine Intervention often happens deposited the recently deceased back on the docks of Sharessia, or sometimes back to the place where the person died.

This is very disconcerting and frequently causes something called Death Amnesia (which is used to justify ones actions to comply with the no griefing rule). Sometimes the character is not even aware they died.

Permadeath happens from time to time and for many unknown reasons, so death is still not something to ignore. Certain magics are known to cause permadeath.

The learned know that an artifact, Rock of Ao and to an extent Haven's Mythal are responsible for the peculiar effect. It may be compounded by Haven's odd unstable weave, although many say that's an effect of the artifacts rather than the cause.
