When she was a child, she let a wizard from Thay that was traveling in the west. After some badgering and convincing she got the wizard to speak with her, and he told her all about the power in his homeland, and how wizard ruled, and how respected there were and how much power they held. She is clearly not a thayan, but that conversation started her down the path to wanting her own magic power.
