I] Introduction

Every nation needs to be able to protect itself against foreign and domestic hostilities. Even the Great Nation of Thay, lead by the most powerful wizard of the world, must maintain a military force.

Each Trade Post, or Thayan Enclave, is not only protected by powerful magic wards but also by flesh and steel of men-at-arms. Due to the unique organization of the Red Wizard, this is less an army than a military force which draws upon the Red for their needs.


II] Description

Enclave architectural structure is clearly a garrison environment. The Red Wizard of Thay, lead the trade post and are in charge of politics and trade.

The functions of the guards are as follows:

• Secure the Enclave
• Serve as bodyguard to Red
• Ensure the discipline when Reds are not around
• Be a visible demonstration of strenght towards the primitive people
• Act as Ambassadors of the Enclave when among the populace

III] Composition

The military force is roughly split in two.

A vast majority of the force are the guards : they consists of creatures from any origins. Guards are chosen primarily for their strength in battle, their lack of value and their obedience. They may be mercenary, undead, half-orcs or human. The guards are lead, trained and organized by the officer of the army. Reds do not care to lower their attention to this level.

Second, are the officers of the army. Normal officer are the Shield and the superior officers are the Knight. Shields may come from any origin (even non-human), but they have proven a minimum level of loyalty, intelligence and skill, to lead the guards under the commands of the Knight. Knights are only pure human and a Mulani bloodline is requested (half is required).




a) Knight

Knights are experienced and highly-trained. Their life is dedicated to protect the Reds and their assets. Such level of loyalty and trust cannot be achieved by a Non-Mulani.
Thayan Knights are the superior officers of the army and they are the advisor to the Reds for all military concerns. Knight is the highest military rank in Thayan society, similar to the noble class, though their rank is just below the Red Wizard.

Pre-requisite : only human with a minimum of half-blood mulani.
Uniform : black armor with a bit of red color. Full black cloak.


b) Shields

Every Knight had to start as a Shield. But not all Shields become Knights. Besides the Mulani pre-requisite, Shield have to prove their skills in many fields : combat, behavior, knowledge, judgment call, supervision of guards.

Pre-requisite : none, but has to be raised to this rank by a Knight.
Uniform : black armor. Dark blue cloak.


c) Guards

Some call them "meat shields" with a bit of disrespect. But they are the common soldier of the army. They do the common tasks : patrol, guard and massive battlefield combat.

Uniform : Dark blue armor and cloak.



IV] Organization


a) The Knight Captain

The military force are under the responsibility of the Knight Captain. He is in charge to dictate the rules about discipline, organization, hiring and promotion.He is the personal advisor of the local Red Wizard leader.
Every Knight, Shield and Guard have to obey to him, even the one who are dedicated to a single Red as long as the Red is tied to the Enclave.


b) The Knight

The Knight are second in command behind the Knight Captain.
They are in charge to ensure discipline, training and teaching for the Shields/Guards.

Their other duty is to provide escort to any Red or Apprentice, protecting them and giving them some prestige by their presence.



c) The Shield

If the Shield is a Mulani, he is an Knight-Apprentice. If not, he is a senior Guard.
In both case, their title is "Shield" and they are the first level to which a Red may give attention to.
They lead the force of the guard as they are expected to a minimum level of skill and behavior.

They have to split their time to their training and to the supervision of the Guards.



c) The Guard

They are the common soldier of the military force. A guard of the Enclave may not be dedicated to a single Red. And no Red is allowed to come in the Enclave with some of his personal guard from his House.
