The sound effect for Chilling tenticals is ridiculously loud. Here is a way to edit it into a more tolerable so you can use it, or stand being near someone who is using it. I picked entangle sound effect, since it sounds very appropriate for the spell.
1. Go to Program Files/Atari/Neverwinter Nights2/Data/Sound/Sound
2. Find the file: sfx_linger_ChililingTentacles (Yes they misspelled chilling).
3. Right click and hold on the file, then drag it to your desktop. Release your right mouse button and select "move here".
4. Find sfx_linger_Entangle
5. Right click and hold on the file, then drag it to your desktop. Release your right mouse button and select "copy here".
6. Right click on sfx_linger_ChililingTentacles, and select properties.
7. Select the name in properties menu, and press ctrl+C
8. close the properties menu, and right click on it again. This time click on "delete". Click on ok or yes on the confirmation popup.
9. Right click on the sfx_linger_Entangle on the desktop, and select properties.
10. Select the name, and press ctrl+v.
11. Close the properties menu, and right click and hold on the file. Drag it to Program Files/Atari/Neverwinter Nights2/Data/Sound/Sound folder and let go.
12. Select move here, and then close your folders.

It is still loud, but it is much less harsh on the ears like this.

Well I tried. I failed. Still, at least now I know how to shut the damned thing up. Just remove sfx_linger_ChililingTentacles altogether. Problem solved. Slightly less desireable than actually fixing it. But hey, it doesn't hurt to hear now.
