Why new site and forums?

Why I am so keen on getting us off the old forums?

Let me count the reasons (in no particular order of importance):

  1. While the current forums have been very useful, they are controlled and supported by a third party. We can't get the data out of it in any particular useful way (to be able to restore from back-ups). In these turbulent times we may find it disappearing at a moments notice without recourse.
  2. Forums are inheritantly a limited media, would rather have an expanded functionality using more advanced software, this is a base for that.
  3. wiki! Like our own wikepedia from Haven's perspective. Using crosswiki links and the same style/syntax as wikipedia (if a bit simplified).
  4. Image hosting! We can offer image uploads.
  5. Customizability! Not only can we modify look and feel, but can write custom code to interact with the game database, since both the website and the game store to (different) MySQL databases.
  6. As supported revenue going to invision. Pet peeve, would rather have that go to help us and my company that supports our hosting.
  7. Bar wants it this way.

Well, there is ways to extract data even from a third-party products.
I did it rather often at work.

If your are interested, I could look if I can extract those of our old forums and inject them into your new ones...
